A phenomenological study of the work experiences of night nurses in Long-term Care Hospitals

Abstract
Objective : The purpose of this study was to conduct a qualitative study to understanding of the work experiences of night nurses in long-term care hospitals for the elderly.

Methods : The interview questions began with the question, ¡°What is your experience of working as a night nurse in long-term care hospitals?¡± to allow participants to speak naturally, and the Colaizzi phenomenological analysis methodology was used.

Results : The study found six components: ¡®working hours based on their own needs¡¯, ¡®burdened by night shift work¡¯, ¡®discomfort from communication gaps between the organization and others¡¯, ¡®fading mind and body¡¯, ¡®crutches that make them endure¡¯, and ¡®need for improved institutional treatment¡¯.

Conclusion : This study will contribute to the improvement of the quality of nursing care by providing a basis for the development of systems and strategies to improve the work environment and job satisfaction of long-term care hospitals night nurses.
